Some are better and longer lasting and I can use things like motor oil and transmission fluid in a pinch but why expose my self to it every time I handle my weapon? What, to save a couple of dollars? Just isn't worth it to me. But having a semi reputable weapon lube break down under normal or slightly above normal conditions is rare. In my experience I can't seem to ever recall a semi auto weapon system failing because of a lube failure lube. They have been tested and approved by the Military and various training organizations. They are non-toxic,non-hazardous and biodegradable. You are exposing yourself to enough toxins on a daily basis why add one more to it? The toxic level is low but take the totality of the circumstances. The problem I have is they all have a certain level of hazard to them. I work with a lot of guys who swear by Mobile One and/or Automatic Transmission Fluid. I'll take the trans anyday atleast the smell washes off. I spent 6 months rebuilding transmissions and 6 months rebuilding differentials at my old shop. Clp for rust prevention Atfwould work for thisĪs far as smells. I use rem dry lube on the raceways and grease on the lugs. I stick with gun specific grease in my pistol(sig) and my rem700. Heavy gear lubes like 90w are design to spin lube so they do cling but they are too heavy for the tolarences of an ar IMO.

There are many better lubes for to metals sliding on eachother like in a rifle. Re: who uses automatic transmission fluid as lubricant ATF is high in detergent content, and is a key component in Eds Red cleaning solvent. It keeps rubber prongs soft and soft rubbers will swell alot because of this. It does not attack rubber it conditions it more than anything ice ever seen. It is designed to be a gear lube while still staying fluid enough for the t/c. That's all a auto trans is is a hydrolic system. I know your rifle doesn't have o-rings and seals, but ymmv.I'll stick to regular lubricants. If you want to go softly with acid, cola is a good mildly acidic cleaning agent. Acid (like CLR, Limeaway, or Naval Jelly) will wipe out blueing in a blink but when hope is lost, it also does a good job on entrenched rust. Once blueing is gone, the metal needs to be scrupulously cleared of any lingering oxidation, then reblued and reoiled. The theory here is to use a penetrant to dislodge the accumulation from below, then use a nonabrasive medium to wipe it clean. My initial approach to removal involves ATF and Scotch Brite. I know it's a no brainer to apply the oil, but any one of us can still find themselves in a similar fix. I occasionally encounter rust when I open the gun cabinet back up in the Spring. Sea Foam makes an ATF additive which works to clean up internal AT solenoid contacts. Keep your transmission operating at its peak with regular transmission fluid exchange services from Ourisman Volkswagen of Laurels service department. These indicators include hard shifting between gears, jumping or slipping of gears, sluggish acceleration, or unusual noise from the vehicle.Re: who uses automatic transmission fluid as lubricantĪTF is high in detergent content, and is a key component in Ed's Red cleaning solvent. There are few indicators of bad transmission fluid to keep in mind so you can quickly recognize these indicators and bring in your vehicle for service. However, we highly recommend that you get a periodic inspection of the transmission system to make sure all the components of the transmission system are in good working order. For most types of vehicles, this service is required between 30,000 to 60,000 miles. The service interval for transmission fluid depends on several factors. The Service Interval for Transmission Fluid Exchange If it is showing more red, then it is still close to new. Put it back all the way down and pull it out again then assess the transmission. Pull out the red transmission fluid dipstick and wipe it off first with any rug. If you delay transmission fluid exchange service, your vehicle’s transmission system can suffer from damage or inefficient performance. You start your engine first because the level of a transmission fluid varies depending on the operating temperature of the engine. We recommend you only get transmission fluid exchange service from authorized service centers for Chevrolet Buick GMC vehicles.

Different types of transmission systems such as manual, automatic, and CVT require different types of transmission fluid.

The condition of the transmission fluid can deteriorate over time, requiring it to be replaced with fresh transmission fluid. The primary function of the transmission fluid is to lubricate the internal components of the transmission system. The transmission fluid plays a vital role in the transmission system.
